Zimar

Zimar, the name by which Eusimar Meireles Gomes signs his work, is widely known as a brincante of the Bumba Meu Boi and a celebrated Cazumbá, a character represented through caretas (frightening masks) and ornate tunics, carrying a bell or rattle in hand. While accompanying the Bumba Meu Boi groups of his region, the artist, recognized as a master, produces masks that transform the brincantes into magical beings of indescribable expression, sharply combining humor and astonishment. Through his masterful handling of diverse materials—especially PVC, sawdust, bones, helmets, and pieces of motorcycles—Zimar creates caretas that are expressive and charged with energy. Each mask holds a singular manifestation, never repeated, yet denoting a common language, revealing the inventiveness and powerful stylistic signature of the artist.

He presented the solo exhibition "Zimar" at Centro Cultural Vale Maranhão, in São Luís, and subsequently at the Museu Nacional da República, in Brasília, and the Museu de Arte do Rio—MAR. He has participated in group exhibitions, biennials, and other projects, including "2ª Bienal das Amazônias" (Belém, 2025); "38º Panorama da Arte Brasileira: Mil graus" (MAM São Paulo, 2024); and "Arqueia mas não quebra" (Almeida & Dale Galeria, São Paulo, 2023), the inaugural edition of the Contra-Flecha program. His works are part of the collection of the Museu Afro Brasil Emanoel Araujo, in São Paulo
