Marlene Barros

Marlene Barros expands the possibilities of embroidery and crochet beyond the domestic sphere, exposing the historical and contemporary tensions of the female body and working through themes such as maternity, eroticism, and the marks of violence. Her fabric sculptures use textile structures to create forms that evoke organs, masks, and architectural fragments, in which the act of sewing serves as an attempt to affirm memories, fill absences, and weave new paths for threads of affection.

Her solo exhibitions include "Marlene Barros: Tecitura do Feminino" (Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil de Belo Horizonte, 2026) and "EntreLinhas" (Convento das Mercês, São Luís, 2024). She has participated in the urban intervention "A Sutura das Brechas do Inexistente" as part of the 1st Bienal das Amazônias itinerary (Praça Valdelino Cécio, São Luís, 2025) and the group exhibition "30 Cores em Maio" (Fundação da Memória Republicana Brasileira, Convento das Mercês, São Luís, 2024), in which she was awarded first prize at the Salon with the work "Quem pariu, que embale."
