Estranhamente Belas - Strangely Beautiful

The exhibition Estranhamente Belas (Strangely Beautiful) brings together 59 works by Zimar and focuses on his current production, organized across three environments: A viagem, Jacarés e outras feições, and Cofo na cabeça—Pássaros nos pés. The works are conceived in a palette moving between blue and the red of the pitanga fruit, colors long used by the people of Maranhão. In this exhibition, masks undergo a transformation—no longer purely utilitarian objects, they become vehicles for visual narratives about the world that surrounds the artist, revealing the universe of the Baixada Maranhense: the colors of the rainy and dry seasons, the mist carried by the wind, the features of people and animals, fauna and flora, architecture, boats, bodies, their structures and skin tones.

His current work is built primarily from discarded and repurposed materials, taking the motorcycle helmet as a base and adding fenders and motorcycle lights, bras, PET bottles, coconut shells, lids, cans, fabric, toothbrushes, mirrors, fan parts, tire tubes, toys, bracket fungus, car and motorcycle lamps, glitter sand, and whatever else imagination calls for—resulting in a singular and authorial body of work that shimmers with a complexity of features, revealing alligators, dogs, monkeys, birds, people, pigs, and opossums.
